About Me

Amber Newton: Born in Vancouver, Amber moved to Toronto for the first time in 2001 to study Art History at The University of Toronto. After completing her degree in 2005, she promptly moved to South Korea to teach English and Art at various public and private schools, most notably The Busan Foreign School.

While teaching in Korea, Amber maintained her own creative practice, exhibiting her work, as well as her students', in numerous galleries and community centres in South Korea. In 2010, Amber auctioned several paintings, along with members of the “Seoul Art Collective”, to raise money for children’s villages in Thailand and Laos.

While living abroad, she volunteered with children in a variety of different settings, from visiting orphanages in South Korea and India, to teaching street kids in Vietnam, and recruiting out-of-school children and youth in the Philippines into school programs run by non-profit organizations.

Since her return to Canada in 2011, Amber has created the Azalea Art Space at the YWCA Elm Centre, a residential community for low-income women and their families, women living with mental health and addiction issues and families of Aboriginal ancestry, where she facilitates creative workshops weekly for the tenants. Amber is currently a Social Service Worker student at George Brown College.
